VFX is the process of combining of live action footage and Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) which looks realistic. By the VFX we can achieve the effects which if we want to create in real life that would be very dangerous, need huge amount of money, time takeing and in some cases impossible to capture. 
    In a case of movies commonly VFX is planed in pre-production period and it is created in the post-production stage of the movie. For the convenience and also for the expected visual effect a VFX expert is always be presented in the set of the movie during the shoot.

 
 Methods of VFX

    There are several techniques in the process of creation of the VFX movie. Some of them are Matte Painting, where artist prepare a painting according to the demand of the script and the illustration is putted into the film later. The another technique is called Rotoscoping, where the visual artist use a motion picture and trace it frame by frame to produce realistic imagery that can be used in a complete different background. Some other VFX techniques are Motion Capturing, Rigging, Composting etc.
